A DAY IN VOLCAN BARU NATIONAL PARK-CHIRIQUI

Baru

The trip up the mountain begins at 5:00 a.m. with the beautiful sunrise that will accompany us as we go.

The Baru volcano is the country's talles t peak, at 3,475 meters above sea level. The impressive sunrise view, along with the lookouts over both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, experience you will never forget. Volcan Baru National Park covers an area of 14,322 hectares and was founded in 1976.

Three distinct ecological zones have been identified in this area, where the rainfall ranges from 2,000 to 4,000 millimeters per year. The median temperature in this subtropical climate ranges from 50° to 65° F. At about 1,700 meters (5,550 feet) in altitude, secondary vegetation dominates the area and the humidity is more intense. Up at 2,200 meters (7,150 feet), the change in vegetation and temperature is immediately noticeable.

The park covers most of the volcanic area of Panama's Talamanca mountain region. The forests in the area are open and less dense than elsewhere in Panama, up to an altitude of 2,100 meters (6,800 feet) At higher levels, the forests are more varied and compact. This is the place where we can appreciate many species of birds, including the radiant quetzal.
