BARRO COLORADO: NATURAL MONUMENT
Before setting out on this excursion, we remind you not to forget your sunglasses, light clothing and mosquito repellant. The departure from the hotel will be by bus, accompanied by a nature guide. We'll drive for about 25 minutes to Gamboa, where we'll board a boat for a 30 minute trip on Gatun Lake, part of the canal, to Gigante Peninsula, part of the Barro Colorado Natural Monument that the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute runs. This is one of the world's best-studied and best-protected tropical rain forests. Here we'll take an interesting walk on a nature trail through one of the world's most diverse and complex eco-systems. Here, you'll have a chance to see many varied plants and animals. Arriving at the island, the boat will tie up at a cove where your hike through this gigantic forest wildlife research center will begin. The exciting tour, during which you will see this tropical wonder's flora and fauna, will take about half of the day. Afterwards, in close proximity to nature, there will be tasty refreshments. To top off your visit to Barro Colorado Island you can enjoy the return trip through the Panama Canal, a good opportunity to take photos before arriving in Gamboa.
