PORTOBELO

Portobelo

We'll visit all of the ruins of this colonial port and its important defensive fortifications. At Portobelo's San Felipe Church you can see the celebrated Black Christ, which is venerated by the whole town during its annual October 21st festival.

Designated as a nationalDesignated as a national park, Portobelo is a world heritage site where you will appreciate the lush palm groves, rich coral formations, jungle cats and water birds that make this place a top-notch attraction. During the 17th and 18th centuries this was the Caribbean port where gold, jewels and other precious cargos from Peru and other Pacific colonies were loaded onto ships headed for Spain. It was the target of several pirate attacks, the most important of which was carried out by Henry Morgan. One of its big attractions is little Drake's Island, where you'll learn more about one the island's celebrated namesake, one of history's legendary buccaneers. Across from this island you'll find another that's no less interesting: Huertas, with its white sands and crystal waters, a great place to scuba dive or just soak up the sun.
